What Is a Hex Nut?

A standard hex nut is a six-sided nut with a plain threaded hole. It relies entirely on friction and clamping force to stay in place. When tightened correctly against a surface, the friction between the nut face, bolt threads, and clamped material keeps it secure.

What Is a Nyloc Nut?

A nyloc nut (nylon insert lock nut) is a hex nut with a nylon collar insert at one end. As the bolt passes through the nylon, it deforms slightly around the threads, creating a friction grip that resists loosening — even under vibration and dynamic loads.

When to Use a Hex Nut

  • High-temperature environments — above 120°C where nylon would soften

When to Use a Nyloc Nut

Nyloc nuts are essential wherever vibration or dynamic loading could cause a standard nut to back off:

  • Motors and rotating machinery — vibration from motors will loosen hex nuts over time
  • Wheels and axles — RC cars, bikes, trolleys, and carts
  • 3D printer motion systems — bed carriages, linear rails, and belt tensioners
  • Automotive applications — anywhere subject to engine vibration or road shock
  • Safety-critical joints — where loosening could cause injury or damage
  • Outdoor assemblies — thermal cycling can cause joints to relax; nyloc compensates

Reusability: An Important Caveat

The nylon insert in a nyloc nut is a one-time locking mechanism. Each time the nut is removed and reinstalled, the nylon deforms a little more and loses some of its grip. As a general rule:

  • Nyloc nuts are reliable for up to 3–5 uses
  • After that, replace them — especially in safety-critical applications
  • If you need a fully reusable locking solution, consider a hex nut with a thread-locking compound (e.g., Loctite) instead
