SS304 vs Mild Steel Fasteners: Which Should You Choose?

When specifying fasteners for a project, one of the most consequential decisions is material. SS304 stainless steel and mild steel are the two most common options — and choosing wrong can mean premature corrosion, structural failure, or unnecessary cost. This guide breaks down the differences so you can make the right call.
What Is SS304 Stainless Steel?
SS304 is the most widely used grade of stainless steel. It contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel (hence it's also called 18/8 stainless). The chromium forms a passive oxide layer on the surface that resists rust and corrosion — even when scratched, this layer self-repairs in the presence of oxygen.
SS304 fasteners are non-magnetic (or very weakly magnetic), have good strength, and are safe for food-contact and outdoor applications.
What Is Mild Steel?
Mild steel (also called low-carbon steel) contains less than 0.3% carbon. It is strong, machinable, weldable, and significantly cheaper than stainless steel. However, it has no inherent corrosion resistance — it will rust when exposed to moisture unless coated or plated (e.g., zinc-plated, black oxide).

When to Choose SS304
SS304 is the right choice when corrosion resistance is non-negotiable:
- Outdoor applications — garden furniture, signage, exterior fixtures exposed to rain and humidity
- Marine or coastal environments — high salt-air exposure accelerates rust on mild steel dramatically (note: for true marine use, SS316 is even better)
- Food processing and kitchen equipment — hygiene requirements demand non-rusting fasteners
- Electronics enclosures — where rust contamination could damage components
- Long-life assemblies — where maintenance access is difficult and fastener replacement is costly
- 3D printed parts and maker projects — where aesthetics matter and rust staining on plastic is unacceptable
When to Choose Mild Steel
Mild steel makes sense when cost and strength are the priority and the environment is controlled:
- Indoor structural applications — steel frames, brackets, and supports in dry environments
- Automotive and machinery — where fasteners are regularly replaced and cost matters at volume
- Temporary assemblies — jigs, fixtures, and formwork that won't be in service long-term
- High-strength requirements — Grade 8.8 or 10.9 mild steel bolts offer higher tensile strength than standard A2 stainless
- Welded assemblies — mild steel is easier to weld without specialist equipment
What About Zinc-Plated Mild Steel?
Many mild steel fasteners come zinc-plated (also called electro-galvanised). The zinc coating provides a degree of corrosion protection — adequate for indoor use and light outdoor exposure. However, the coating is thin (typically 5–8 microns) and will eventually wear or chip, exposing the steel beneath. For long-term outdoor or humid environments, SS304 is still the better choice.
A Note on Galling
One downside of stainless steel fasteners is galling — a form of cold welding where the threads seize during tightening. This is more common with stainless-on-stainless assemblies. To prevent it, use an anti-seize lubricant (e.g., copper-based or nickel-based) when assembling SS304 fasteners into stainless threads.

- SS304 — Outdoor, humid, coastal, food-contact, long-life, or aesthetic applications. Worth the extra cost.
